Bouldering Clinic
Feb 28 @ 6:00 pm – 6:30 pm

We recommend this clinic for everyone. We cover proper topping out technique, the importance of active spotting, how to fall on our Futurist bouldering floor, and River Rock policies.

This class is required if you are under the age of 13 in order to top-out in the bouldering section. A parent or legal guardian must attend with you. Once you satisfactorily pass the clinic you are permitted to top-out.

This clinic takes approximately 30 minutes.

• How to fall
• Proper top-out techniques
• Downclimbing
• Active spotting
• Review of River Rock bouldering policies

Belay Class
Mar 1 @ 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

In the Basic Belay Course you will work with our instructor and learn the technique of belaying. After taking the class and before your first time climbing, you will be required to take a belay test showing the staff that you have retained all the information and skills necessary. Taking this class and successfully passing the belay test will certify you to belay climbers in the gym.

This course takes approximately an hour and a half. Rental harness and shoes are provided in course fee if needed.

Course Prerequisite: participants must be at least 13 years old

• Knot craft and harness tie-in
• BUS Belay method
• Rope management
• Use of a Petzl ATC and Grigri
• Climber/Belayer communication
• Arresting a fall
• Lowering a climber
• Basic climbing technique
• Climbing rating system

Youth Competitive Climbing Team

River Rock Youth Competitive Climbing Team
Youth 9-17 years old
Tues. 5:30-7pm & Sat. 10-11:30am

Our Youth Competitive Climbing Team welcomes youth of all skill levels looking to challenge themselves in a competitive climbing format. Competition climbing is an exciting individual sport which promotes physical strength and confidence. In addition, climbing helps youth build lasting friendships and a good work ethic. As a member of the Team, you will participate in two 1.5 hour practices a week and participate in a number of local bouldering or sport climbing competitions with the opportunity to progress to regional and national competitions. Participation in the competitive Team is by coaches’ invitation. Team members must be youth members of the gym, own their own climbing shoes, and will be responsible to climb and workout over and above the two coached sessions a week.

This is a mat based class (utilizing yoga style floor mats) designed to develop functional core strength, promote correct alignment, and focusing on breath and balance. Each class will end with stretching.

The exercises will be similar to a Pilates based program, but will focus on a climber’s core strength and movement. Not only will it improve athletic performance, it help foster valuable insights about your body and your limits.

The class will be broken into beginners and intermediate/advanced. The first half hour (6:30-7 pm) will focus on beginner movement and basic form. The second half (7-7:30 pm) will move into intermediate and advanced movement.

The instructor, Anja, is a licensed physical therapist in Denmark and an active climber. She also conducts private instruction at emPower Yoga & Pilates in Roanoke.

No matter your level of comfort with yoga, Pilates, or climbing, expect a supportive atmosphere.

Reach Your Peak
Climbing Fitness Program

Reach Your Peak (RYP) is an eight-week climbing fitness training program that utilizes a combination of roped climbing and bouldering (non-roped climbing) for climbers to improve their skills and reach their personal fitness goals.The program was developed utilizing auto-belay devices for the roped climbing components, so no need to have a climbing partner.
Any level of climber can participate! Improve your overall health, improve endurance, and strengthen already existing skill-sets. Of course, there are other unintended side effects that have been seen from following this program:

Healthy weight-loss
Overall feeling of increased “coolness”
New-found or renewed passion for climbing
Increased popularity
Less tired and sluggish at work
Better nights of sleep

Each weekly session will also have additional workouts or “homework” that will require you to make additional visits to the gym before you start the next program week. We recommend that participants are members of the gym for the duration of the 8 week program.

No additional cost to participate over regular admission to the gym or gym membership.You can either go it alone or participate as a group in our RYP work-out sessions. Our staff will be available during the organized sessions to answer questions, give support, or help guide technique.
